Charlie McCabe (Marketing. Born, The Bronx, NY, Feb. 27, 1937.) A banking executive who exerted enormous influence in New York sports, Charles Henry McCabe, Jr., supported dozens of events through sponsorships. McCabe created a substantial image for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company by sponsoring events such as the New York City Marathon (starting in 1976), Mets baseball, and U.S. Open tennis. He also oversaw the creation of the Corporate Challenge, a bank-owned 3.5-mile race that has expanded beyond New York to over a dozen cities on five continents since its inception in 1977. McCabe extended the reach of sponsorships into college athletics by underwriting seasonal schedules and media guides. The sponsorship of the Marathon was so successful that it lasted more than 25 years and attracted other major companies to the event. McCabe moved into a merged Chemical Bank in 1991 and Chase in 1995. He carried the sponsorship programs that he launched at Manufacturers Hanover with him. McCabe’s other ventures include the Westchester Classic golf tournament, which the bank sponsored from 1977-89, the N.I.T., and the Holiday Festival, as well as the Chase Championships women’s tennis event at Madison Square Garden (1996-2000). He began his career at Shaw Walker in 1960 following his graduation from Holy Cross, then moved to National City Bank in 1964 and Manufacturers Hanover in 1967. McCabe is a long-time trustee of Iona College, where he earned an M.B.A. in 1968. He retired from Chase in 1997 and formed his own sports marketing firm.
